Drawn Away
Read This Week: Deuteronomy 13
If you hear it said about one of the towns the Lord your God is giving you to live in that troublemakers have arisen among you and have led the people of their town astray, saying, “Let us go and worship other gods” (gods you have not known), then you must inquire, probe, and investigate it thoroughly. And if it is true and it has been proved that this detestable thing has been done among you. – Deuteronomy 13:12-14 NIV
Deuteronomy 13 can be a difficult chapter. It belongs to a particular moment in Israel’s covenant history, and its commands concerning false prophets, idolatry, and judgment can feel severe. But we should resist the temptation either to soften the text or to transport Israel’s civil penalties into our own context carelessly. Beneath those commands is a theological principle that reaches far beyond ancient Israel: God takes our allegiance seriously.
The chapter presents three different ways Israel could be drawn away from God: through a persuasive spiritual voice, through someone deeply loved and trusted, or through the influence of an entire community. Different sources. Same temptation. “Let us go and serve other gods.” That repetition shows the central concern is not merely the existence of idols. It is the movement of the heart and what can move us away from God.
The first warning is perhaps the most surprising. Moses describes a prophet or dreamer who provides a sign, and the sign actually happens. We tend to assume that if something works, it must be right. If the business grows, the strategy must be good. If the platform expands, the message must be true. If the opportunity opens, God must be behind it. If someone is charismatic, gifted, successful, persuasive, we assume credibility. The Scriptures dismantle that assumption. Effectiveness is not the same thing as faithfulness.
Something can produce results and still pull us in the wrong direction. An opportunity can be profitable and unhealthy. A relationship can be exciting and destructive. A leader can be gifted and untrustworthy. A philosophy can sound sophisticated while slowly taking our confidence away from God. Discernment therefore asks more than, “Does it work?” It asks, “Where is this leading me?” That may be one of the most important questions we can ask about anything influencing our lives.
The second warning becomes more personal. Moses moves from prophets to relationships: a brother, son, daughter, spouse, or close friend. Not everything that competes with our devotion to God arrives looking evil. Sometimes it comes through affection. We naturally give influence to people we love, and we should. But love can become disordered when our desire to preserve a relationship outweighs our desire to remain faithful to what is true. We can begin adjusting convictions to avoid tension. We remain silent because honesty might cost us something. We permit unhealthy behavior because confronting it feels unloving. We slowly become someone different because belonging has become more important than obedience.
Biblical faithfulness is not permission to become harsh, suspicious, or self-righteous. Truth and love are not enemies. But Scripture consistently refuses to allow love for people to replace love for God. Healthy relationships should not require us to surrender our deepest convictions. There is a difference between loving someone unconditionally and allowing that person unlimited influence over who we are becoming.
As the chapter ends, Moses returns to obedience: listening to God, keeping His commands, and doing what is right. That is the message inside a chapter filled with warnings. Faithfulness is not just about rejecting false gods. It is continually returning our hearts to the true God. That requires attention. We should regularly examine what is shaping us. We should pay attention to the voices we repeatedly hear, the people who carry disproportionate influence, the environments we inhabit, the ambitions we pursue, and the stories we tell ourselves about what will finally make life meaningful.
The question of Deuteronomy 13 is not simply, Do we worship idols? It is more searching than that: What has enough influence over us to compete with our allegiance to God? An even more practical question is: Where is it leading us? Every voice, relationship, ambition, system, and culture is forming us in some direction. God sometimes does His own drawing away as He pulls us away from what and where we don’t need to go or be, and back to Him and the path of worship He wants us on.
The goal is not to live suspicious of everything around us. It is to live awake. To love people deeply without putting them above God. To pursue success without worshiping it. To participate in culture without surrendering discernment to it. To appreciate gifted leaders without confusing charisma with character. To receive opportunities without assuming every open door is God’s direction. And to continually bring the center of our lives back into alignment with the One who belongs there.
Deuteronomy chapter 13 Verse 6-8
6. If your brother, the son of your mother, or your son or daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is as your own life entices you secretly, saying, Let us go and serve other gods– gods you have not known, you know where your fathers,
7. Of the gods of the peoples who are around about you, near you or far away from you, from one end of the Earth to the other—
8. You shall not give consent to him or listen to him; nor shall your eye pity him, nor shall you spare him or conceal him.
God Is Saying To Me:
I am a God of truth! In your life, you will encounter men and women that encourage false beliefs and temptation into signs or false dreams but you will walk with Me because you love Me!
My Story:
One day last week, I went to check my mail at the mailbox and on my way back to my house, the neighbor raised his hand and spoke to me and waved. His girlfriend was sitting beside of him and their dog was out front on a leash. It is not for me to judge, but they seem like nice people, but they have visual priorities that are seen to be not conducive to being a Christian and serving one God. They drink and smoke cigarettes and the female has been arrested on drug charges in the past.
My old nature started to kick in and I heard a voice of encouragement to go over and be friendly, pet the dog and just see how they were doing. I do see the gentleman on occasion at the grocery store and I always speak and smile but keep moving.
The Bible teaches to avoid those that have a different ideology and place their time and talents toward things that are not productive to serve God. I wanted to pet the dog as I am a animal lover and God spoke to me in that moment. He encouraged me to just smile and bless them with kind words and keep moving toward my house. The enemy was also encouraging me to go and pet the dog, but I had to discern the difference between God’s voice and the enemy’s voice. Thank you God that I’m learning to listen to your voice and become more obedient to things that I’m learning. Thank you Father God for meeting me right in the middle of the driveway to my house!
Father God also prompted me with a conviction. He emphasized the importance of prayer once again to me. God’s voice told me to pray and pray for all those who have addiction issues. I was obedient and sat down to pray for the neighbors and anyone struggling with testing from the enemy and also testing from God to see where my heart lies. I’m learning to pray more and more as God convicts my heart because it’s important that no person or individual sends the wrong message to keep me out of alignment with God’s word and God’s heart. God wants my heart loyal to hHm and only Him!
I feel God’s presence stronger and stronger each day that I’m obedient to His calling and follow His ways and His will for my life. I cannot worry about what others think of me because I’m a Christian and I serve God. I used to be busy pleasing people but God tells me to be busy serving, praying and encouraging others to know Him on a personal level.
There are some situations, things, and people that I must avoid that have a possibility of causing to stray with what I have with God. I pray for them from a distance that they will reach out and ask for guidance and assistance. I’ve learned to not put myself in situations where I’m alone with temptation. I try to surround myself with those today that love God. I also try to not respond with my emotions.
The bigger question for me is this… Who will I serve today and where am I going with God? Thank you God that you lead me and have led me to a wonderful group of people that love you, serve you and put you above everything else. You are what matters to me. I just want to be a better steward, encourager and a person of integrity that speaks truth! You are a good, good Father! I love you Lord, Jesus and the Holy Spirit that dwells within me! ❤️
CHOOSE LIFE — DEUTERONOMY 13 ❤️
Whose Voice Is Leading Your Heart?
Deuteronomy 13:4 (AMP)
“You shall walk after the LORD your God and fear Him [with awe-filled reverence and profound respect]; and you shall keep His commandments, and listen to His voice, and serve Him, and cling to Him.”
Moses was teaching the Israelites to recognize whose voice they were following and remain faithful to Father God.
Today, many voices compete for your attention. Sometimes it’s the words of others. Sometimes it’s your own fears, hurt feelings, or old ways of thinking.
Before you react, become offended, or allow someone’s words to steal your peace, stop and ask yourself:
Is this drawing my heart closer to Father God, or pulling me away from Him?
Jesus teaches us to recognize His voice and follow Him (John 10:27).
You don’t have to follow every thought, believe every feeling, or react to every word spoken to you.
You can choose to listen to Father God instead.
A Prayer you can pray
Father God, teach me to recognize Your voice above every other voice. Help me surrender my thoughts, feelings, and reactions to You. Jesus, lead my heart in Your truth and love. Holy Spirit, help me recognize what is true, remind me of Father God’s Words and guide me in how to respond with love and wisdom. Amen. ❤️
Love you Father God ❤️
