Read This Week: Deuteronomy 12
But take your consecrated things and whatever you have vowed to give, and go to the place the Lord will choose. Present your burnt offerings on the altar of the Lord your God. Be careful to obey all these regulations I am giving you, so that it may always go well with you and your children after you, because you will be doing what is good and right in the eyes of the Lord your God. – Deuteronomy 12:26-28 NIV
Deuteronomy 12 can seem like it’s about places, sacrifices, and worship practices. But it holds a profound theological truth: God cares not only that we worship Him, but also how we worship Him. Israel was entering a new land surrounded by cultures with their own gods, rituals, and definitions of what it meant to live well. God therefore called His people to resist the temptation to blend Him into their surroundings. They were to tear down the places of false worship and establish their worship around the place God Himself would choose. Their relationship with the Lord was not to be shaped by whatever was culturally convenient; it was to be shaped by God’s presence, power, and revelation.
We live in a world filled with competing voices telling us what deserves our attention, affection, money, loyalty, and time. We’ve talked about this before, but idolatry may not look like a pagan statue on a hill. It can look like career, comfort, reputation, political identity, entertainment, possessions, romance, achievement, or even our desire for control. The deeper issue isn’t merely what we possess, but what possesses us. The bigger question is: Who gets to define what is worthy of my worship? If God is truly Lord, then He’s not simply added to a life whose priorities have already been determined by everything else.
One theme of the chapter is that worship is meant to gather God’s people together. Israel was not instructed to worship God however and wherever each person preferred. God appointed a center for their worship. Biblical faith is not merely a private spirituality in which we construct a God to fit our preferences. God calls His people into a community, and genuine worship draws us out of ourselves. The Bible teaches that following Christ involves belonging to His people. Faith is personal, but it is not meant to be private.
This section also repeatedly connects worship with joy. The people were to bring their offerings before the Lord and rejoice in His presence. This matters because obedience to God can sometimes feel like a monotonous religious duty. Yet biblical worship is not fundamentally about earning God’s favor through miserable performance. It responds to God’s goodness; He commands Israel, and He also reminds them to eat, celebrate, give thanks, and rejoice before Him. Holiness and joy are not opposed. When rightly understood, holiness teaches us to enjoy God’s gifts without turning those gifts into little gods.
At the same time, it teaches us to receive ordinary gifts from God with gratitude. Food, family, work, celebration, and the enjoyment of creation are inherent to spiritual life. The danger comes when good gifts become ultimate things. Scripture does not call us to despise God’s gifts; it calls us to receive them as such. Believers can enjoy a meal, pursue meaningful work, laugh with friends, build a family, or appreciate beauty while remembering that none of these things can bear the weight of being God.
The good news of the gospel is that the Lord does not merely expose misplaced worship; He calls us back to Himself. In Christ, we see the One who perfectly loved the Father and lived with undivided devotion. Jesus does not merely tell us to worship right; He reconciles us to God so our worship flows from grace rather than fear. Because of Christ, we do not have to construct a life impressive enough to make the Father accept us. We are invited to receive His mercy and then reorder our lives around Him.
Worship directs our entire life. What we love, how we spend our time, what we pursue, how we use our possessions, how we treat people, and what we trust all reveal what we worship. The challenge is not simply to remove competing altars but to fill our lives with a greater vision of God Himself. It then becomes the pathway by which our lives align with reality, gratitude, joy, and love.

How do you handle God’s blessings?
Well, the first thing is to enjoy them. God blesses us because He loves us, and His blessings are for our good. It’s okay to receive them with joy and gratefulness and say, “Thank You, Lord. I love You, Lord.”
I know sometimes I’ve struggled with that. God blesses me, and I’m thankful, but I almost hold back from getting too excited. I’m thinking, “Am I going to handle this the wrong way? Am I going to start thinking it’s all about me?”
But we don’t have to be afraid to receive. We just need to remember who’s blessing us. I always like to say, “I do the work; God makes things happen.” He’s the source.
So enjoy what God has given you. Be happy about it. And then ask, “Lord, how can I use this for You and for others?”
We give through the church with our tithes and offerings. We also give our time and use the abilities and talents God has given us. And throughout the week, there are opportunities to bless people in our everyday lives.
One thing I’ve learned is to give as God directs me. Sometimes helping means giving something. Sometimes it means allowing someone room to take their own steps with God. We don’t want to enable something that’s hurting them or step in when God is teaching them to trust Him. That can be a tough line to walk, and that’s why we need His direction.
But don’t let that keep you from receiving or giving. It’s a flow of God—to you and through you. You receive His blessings, you give back to Him, and you bless others as He leads you.
It’s okay to receive from God. It’s okay to receive from other people. Giving and receiving are part of life in His kingdom, and it’s a beautiful thing.
1. Worship God His way. Israel could not mix the worship of other gods with worship of the Lord. We need to let God’s Word guide how we approach Him.
2. Receive His blessings with joy and responsibility. God told His people to rejoice together, enjoy His provision, bring Him what was set apart, and remember the Levite.
3. Choose His direction over what seems right to you. The choice between God’s instructions and the practices around them reaches into ordinary life, not just moments of worship.
CHOOSE LIFE — DEUTERONOMY 12
WORSHIP FATHER GOD HIS WAY
“Father God, teach me to worship You and live for You Your way—not simply the way that seems right to me.” ❤️
Moses is preparing the Israelites to enter the Promised Land. They are leaving the wilderness and entering a land filled with people who worship false gods.
Moses warns them not to copy the worship they see around them. Father God wants their hearts completely His.
Then Moses says something very important:
Deuteronomy 12:8 AMP
“You shall not do at all what we are doing here today, every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes.”
Father God wasn’t telling His people, “Just do whatever feels right to you.” He was teaching them, “Listen to Me. Let Me show you how to live.”
We need that today too.
Sometimes we think, “This feels right to me,” “I don’t see anything wrong with it,” or “Everybody else is doing it.”
But worship asks, “Father God, what do You say?”
Worship is more than singing a song. Worship is how you live when the song is over.
You worship Father God when you choose His way over your feelings. When you’re hurt and ask Jesus to help you respond with love. When you’re worried and pray instead of allowing fear to control you. When you don’t know what to do and turn to God’s Word for direction.
You are saying, “Father God, Your way matters more to me than my way.”
Moses also told the people to rejoice before the LORD for everything He had given them.
Worship isn’t only about what you give up. It’s also stopping and saying, “Father God, thank You.”
Thank You for another day. Thank You for providing for me. Thank You for carrying me. Thank You for loving me. Thank You for Jesus.
Jesus said:
John 4:23
“The true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth.”
Because of Jesus, we don’t worship to earn Father God’s love. We worship because we are already loved.
And we Live Him! ❤️
So this week, before you react, stop and ask Father God how He wants you to respond. Before an important decision, pray. When worry comes, give it to Him. When something good happens, thank Him.
And if something has become more important in your heart than Father God, give it back to Him.
Moses was preparing God’s people for a new place, but Father God was preparing their hearts.
Don’t simply do what seems right in your own eyes. Listen to Father God. Follow His Word. Rejoice in Him. Worship Him with your life.
Worship isn’t just the song you sing on Sunday.
Worship is the life you live Monday through Saturday.
Every day you can pray

Deuteronomy Chapter 12 Verse 8
You shall not do according to all we do here [in the camp] this day, every man doing whatever looks right in his own eyes.
Deuteronomy Chapter 12 Verse 9
For you have not yet come to the rest and to the inheritance which the Lord your God gives you.
God Is Saying To Me:
My child, view the world through my eyes and not through your eyes and in your own will. Obey my words and respect and obey their dwelling place.
My Story
There was a time about 6 months ago that I was going to have shoulder surgery and I had asked a neighbor if he could come and put up a blind for me before I had the surgery. He told me to go and purchase the blind and then he would be over to put it up. He never came and I saw him one day and asked if he was going to come and put up the blind and he said he would be over the next day. The next day came and went and I have not seen him. I had to purchase a stepladder, drill, drill bits and put the blind up myself. I scoffed at the fact that pretty much all he did was sit around and drink beer and smoke cigarettes.
I became upset that I was lied to and carried a grudge for some time. Father God prompted me to pray for this man and his girlfriend. Father God also reminded me to forgive this person and pray that they know Jesus and to continue to pray for them going forward.
Father God met me in this chapter. I was reminded how faithful He is and how much He wants me to be obedient, respectful and not carry baggage with me and try to serve Him at the same time. He prompted me again to pray and let the situation go.
In forgiving this man, I felt free, peaceful and joyful! Serving God in my neighborhood, home and with other Christians should focus on representing Father God well. I can enjoy the fruits of the spirit, prayer, worship and fellowship to the fullest if I am not focused on paganistic ways of others. This chapter reminded me also to focus on my growth, service and worship to God through Jesus. I want to grow and mature in the Lord the right way and not just worship God any old way I see fit. Thank you Lord for your grace and mercy that surpasses all understanding and helping me to make the right decisions and actions pleasing to you. I love you God, Jesus and the Holy Spirit! ❤️
Deuteronomy chapter 12
God is saying to me I love when you are watchful and only rely on me .
So when I’m out and about, I always ask Jesus before I go to the store let my eyes see what you want me to see Lord and he always shows me something. Sometimes I get to minister or simply just giving a person a smile saying God loves you can make a difference.
God is amazing and I want to please him and bring him up everywhere I go .
