Love at First Sight
Read This Week: Genesis 24
Then he prayed, “Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham. See, I am standing beside this spring, and the daughters of the townspeople are coming out to draw water. May it be that when I say to a young woman, ‘Please let down your jar that I may have a drink,’ and she says, ‘Drink, and I’ll water your camels too’—let her be the one you have chosen for your servant Isaac. By this, I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.” Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel, son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. – Genesis 24:12-15 NIV
“Love at first sight” is a phrase that has been around for generations. It describes the instant attraction and connection between two people or on the part of just one person. But is it real? Do people see each other and, in a moment, know they are meant to be? A lot of evidence suggests that they do. Countless stories are told about people experiencing love at first sight or a pull or attraction that makes someone open to the possibilities of a relationship without knowing someone. A similar narrative (with a bit of a different twist) is found in Genesis 24, where Abraham’s servant embarks on a quest to find a suitable wife for Isaac. This blog post delves into the key themes and lessons woven into the fabric of Genesis 24, shedding light on the significance of spiritual guidance and faithful obedience.
In life’s complex ups and downs, decisions about relationships, especially long-term ones, are among the most significant. This chapter is a beautiful testament to the importance of seeking God’s wisdom and guidance regarding who we are in a relationship with. Whether it is a friendship, a marriage, or other connections, we should ask the Lord to give us discernment and sound judgment to choose wisely. This approach is what Abraham takes regarding his son’s future mate. He is conscious of the covenant with God and sends his trusted servant on a mission, committing the process to God’s sovereignty and divine intervention. It shows us that we should also approach big decisions in life and at various crossroads with prayer and a reliance on God’s guidance, recognizing that His plan far surpasses our own.
Eliezer’s prayer beside the well is a poignant moment in the section, illustrating the power of communication with the Lord about practical and essential decisions in life, especially ones involving love and lasting commitment. Verses 12-14 say:
“Lord, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today and show kindness to my master Abraham. By this, I will know that you have shown kindness to my master.”
The presence of the sign involving a specific response from the chosen woman showcases the delicate balance between faith and action. It prompts reflection on our lives — the moments when we’ve sought the Holy Spirit’s and the Bible’s guidance to light and affirm our paths. This part of the chapter encourages us to cultivate a prayerful heart, attentive to the truths and signs that may illuminate our journeys. Rebekah was hospitable, beautiful, and willing to tend to the needs of others. Still, she was not love at first sight to Eliezer because she was pretty, available, or kind, but because he sought the Lord to show him and make him see the one He would provide for Isaac.
Both Abraham and Eliezer exemplify faithful obedience to God’s commands that we should exude. Abraham’s charge to find a wife from his own people and Eliezer’s meticulous execution showcase a commitment to following God’s will no matter what. Their example challenges us to be obedient to the divine call in our lives, even when the path seems uncertain. It underscores that faithfulness to God’s commands is a key to unlocking His blessings. As we navigate our lives, they inspire us to seek divine direction, look for the Holy Spirit’s movement, and embrace faithful obedience to God’s word. In doing so, we can discover our own love stories unfolding in unexpected and beautiful ways, guided by the hand of God.
Genesis Chapter 24 Verse 26
The man bowed down his head and worshiped the Lord
Genesis Chapter 24 Verse 27
And said, Blessed be the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, Who has not left my master bereft and destitute of His loving- kindness and steadfastness, As for me, going on the way [of obedience and faith] the Lord led me to the house of my master’s kinsman.
Genesis Chapter 24 Verse 33
A meal was set before him, but he said, ‘I will not eat until I have told of my errand. And [Laban] sad, Speak on.
Genesis Chapter 24 Verse 41
Then you shall be clear from my oath, when you come to my kindred; and if they do not give her to you, you shall be free and innocent of my oath.
~My Father’s Work~
God Is Saying To Me:
Praise be to me, I am your father. God! I have great plans for you. I know your heart and I see your actions, thank you for being a good and faithful servant, seeking my heart and showing obedience to my calling for your life. Yes, I have great plans for you and desire to further my kingdom through using and blessing you to help convict the hearts of lost souls for me. Just know, that when you put me before everything else you are making me proud and exhibiting great faith and steadfastness, obedience and strength in the validity of your faith for me Keep praying, listening to my voice, studying, being kind and compassionate in all that you do, remembering that you are doing it for me! Always respond and know that I am the master of orchestration and the leader of light!
What This Means To Me:
We need to be busy listening and responding to God’s calling. If we are dedicated, spirit driven, outcome, responsible for doing our Father’s work, we have no room in our hearts and minds to dilly dally around. Rapid responders are always striving for Godly excellence and a vision of productive end results for the kingdom of God. May we never wear our emotions and missions for God on our shirt sleeve but rather guard and protect God’s business in our hearts. Thank you Father God for your opportunities to bless you, further the kingdom and bring starving souls to you. May we always be diligent in our work first before everything else! Thank you Father God for the Holy Spirit that stirs the spirit for you! ❤️
What drives our actions and words in life? This is a question that often leads to deep reflection. Are our motivations rooted in personal gain or swayed by the shifting tides of societal trends?
This question guides me along a spiritual path that transcends mere self-interest and the allure of popular opinion. It’s a journey illuminated by the teachings of Christ, steering me towards a life filled with love, service, and humility. In embracing this path, I’ve uncovered a profound sense of fulfillment that outshines my previous pursuits.
From this introspection, three core truths have emerged:
1. Life is an adventure meant to be journeyed with the light of divine love and wisdom.
2. True fulfillment lies not in following our own whims or the crowd, but in aligning with a higher, divine plan.
3. Living in harmony with God is more than just honorable; it brings a deeper, richer meaning to our life.

Genesis 24:12 And he said, “O Lord, God of my master Abraham, please grant me success today, and show lovingkindness (faithfulness) to my master Abraham. 13 Behold, I stand here at the spring of water, and the daughters of the men of the city are coming out to draw water; 14 now let it be that the girl to whom I say, ‘Please, let down your jar so that I may [have a] drink,’ and she replies, ‘Drink, and I will also give your camels water to drink’—may she be the one whom You have selected [as a wife] for Your servant Isaac; and by this I will know that You have shown lovingkindness (faithfulness) to my master.”
15 Before Eliezer had finished speaking (praying), Rebekah came out with her [water] jar on her shoulder.

God focused my attention on Genesis 24 verses 26-27:
“26 Then the man bowed down and worshiped the Lord, 27 saying, “Praise be to the Lord, the God of my master Abraham, who has not abandoned his kindness and faithfulness to my master. As for me, the Lord has led me on the journey to the house of my master’s relatives.”
God said on this, “My son, do not forget the joys of life while you strive for betterment. Every journey is a blessing and every event a gift. Stop and smell the roses :)”
What an amazing reminder from God to recognize that not everything has to be so heavy. Although life is challenging on purpose, there are so many moments that we can embrace and rejoice from God along the way. Don’t forget to smile and thank God for the beauty he surrounds us with. Love you all.
